Do This and You’ll Never Run Out of Ways to Serve God
On those days I feel useless this question God asks helps me - a lot!
On A Personal Note
I was asked to preach in Yalta, Ukraine without any experience and with an interpreter. What could go wrong? Pretty much everything! But to my amazement, when I finished God used it anyway.
I can be hard on myself – others can be too! What about you? What’s worse are those seasons where I’m distracted, discouraged or feel uninterested in serving the Lord.
I don’t like to admit it. I know I could or should do more but don’t. How about you? Yet throughout Scripture I find myself in good company. And then there’s Moses – 40 years – serving himself.
The Text Message
God asks good questions. But there is one in Exo. 4:2 we can use daily when it feels like we’re not doing enough in service to the Lord. Moses had been doing his own thing for decades!
Please don’t wait that long! To be honest, every legitimate excuse we give for doing our own thing instead of God’s is taken away with one question God asks: What is that in thine hand?
For Moses it was what he used every day – a rod. Nothing special, nothing planned, prayed over, or “out there somewhere” – just spontaneous awareness that God uses simple stuff.
We can be useful and further God’s interests if we’ll just take what we have or do naturally every day, become aware, and make it available. We really have no excuses. God can use it.
So, what’s in your hand? What is it you’re doing today, right now, that can also become an opportunity to bless, pray, share encouragement, the gospel hope or point others to God?
Remind yourself today: My usefulness to God is not determined by my ability but only by my availability. I don’t even have to go out of my way. I just need to be more aware.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Your usefulness is already in your hand, with what you have, do daily, and being who you already are. Just give it to God and it will be more than enough.
How are you going to answer the question God’s asking you today? No excuses allowed!
Let’s Take the Message Home
Right now, identify what you do routinely without much thought or effort. Look in the car, garage, at work, home, your network, interests, skills, possessions, even your personality.
Ask God to make you aware of what you already have, do, enjoy, or endure daily. Can you pray while driving, show hospitality, be neighborly, invite someone or encourage others?
What skill, routine, passion, trait or possession will you make available to God, today? Give it to God and it will be more than enough.
