When Things Are A Mess Start Here

When you're asking how do I get out of this, you need to ask this question instead

On A Personal Note

What a mess! Sometimes it was funny, other times it was so serious I didn’t know what to do. But God did. Whether by our own missteps or another’s, God’s right there to guide our next steps.

In these moments of struggling with “how do I get out this” I’ve learned by painful experience God is teaching and helping us answer a different question: “what do I get out of this?”

The Text Message

In Gen. 35, Jacob’s family and life are a mess. Gripped with fear of “what’s next”, he learns God uses our messes to point us in the direction He wants us to go. Our messes are God’s messengers.

God uses them to remind us of the things we probably already knew but didn’t get around to doing. He also points out places we need to revisit if we’re going to move forward successfully (v. 1-3).

Bethel was the place Jacob met, heard and sensed God’s presence. Where’s yours? It might be a place you need to return physically, emotionally, or spiritually. God’s waiting to help you recover.

But first, some things must go (v. 2). Rachel had her dad’s gods, Levi and Simeon had spoils, trophies, sin, and rage. Jacob delayed while Dinah had regrets and bitterness. What’s in your way?

(v. 4-7). You can be sure that with a sincere desire, nothing can get in the way of getting to God. As you go, you’ll sense His security and the liberty to let go of whatever’s holding you back.

Let’s Take the Message Home

Identify places in your life you might have to physically or mentally revisit to reconnect with God. Before you go, write down and plan on what “stuff” must get buried before you get there (v. 2-7).

Get rid of all the obvious things first – idols, secrets, uncleanness, attitudes – all the “stuff”. Now, as you step toward God, let Him show you what else needs to get buried, and do it.
