I Disagree with The Way This Popular Bible Passage Is Presented
The believers didn’t want the preacher to go there; He went anyway and...
I’ve seen this too many times as a Christian, so have you, and it makes me really mad. Those who profess to believe the gospel can’t seem to be the gospel when it really counts.
They would rather point out someone’s sin instead of pointing them to the Saviour. Or point out the right “standard” instead of revealing the Standard Bearer. They’re “missing the mark”!
Okay, there’s my vent and some need to repent! As believers, we can do better, right?
In John 4, Jesus was taking believers somewhere they didn’t want to go. He does that with you too. Maybe He’s been trying to get your attention and you’ve been avoiding the subject. You know.
Yet God goes out of His way to meet with the “sinners” who need Him most. I’m so grateful. Here, He meets with a woman whose life is a mess. She struggles in relationships (John 4:13-18).
We don’t know her why (the backstory), we just know her what. Serial divorcee, living in sin.
Instead of focusing on her living in fornication, Jesus focused on her lack of fulfilment. He does that with us who believe as well. The gospel deals with the sin through eyes that can see past it.
Those who sin need to be seen through the eyes of Jesus more than they need to be stigmatized.
When we see with the eyes of Jesus, we’ll see past deeds and get to the need: The gospel. How do you see others? When we genuinely live the gospel we proclaim, we see past the sin to the person.
You and I are the gospel to others – Jesus’ eyes, hands, words, grace, gentleness, mercy, spirit and truth – His ministers (v. 24). Those who love to point out sin may well possess the wrong “spirit”.
When we become the gospel, it’s more believable. More demonstration than declaration will help us grow stronger in our beliefs and deeper in our walk with Jesus. Does this make sense to you?
So, who will you be the gospel to today? Our privilege is to make the gospel visible and accessible, not undesirable.
What will you look past so others feel seen and can become fulfilled in Jesus?
