Relational, Spiritual, or Theological Ruts Get Worse When You Do This

Why is it when we get stuck, we make a bigger mess by instinctively...

Did you ever do something stupid, then continue doing it while expecting different results? You’re not alone! We dig our holes deeper, spin our wheels until we’re stuck in a rut, and drive into ditches.

In New York, we spin our wheels in the snow and get more stuck, on the farm it’s the mud, in Kentucky it’s those treacherous ditches along the country roads!

So, when we get stuck in a rut, what’s next? Doing more of the same is a bad plan!

Trying harder is like putting your pedal to the metal when you’re stuck – it just makes a bigger mess, you get more deeply entrenched, and either frustrated or just resign yourself to staying stuck.

We can get into a relational rut – it feels like a daily grind, monotonous, nothing’s working.

Maybe it’s spiritual – We skip time in God’s word, prayer, fellowship or go through the motions.

Theological ruts keep us stuck in a framework not realizing it’s familiar but not necessarily biblical.

Pick a rut. You get the point.

Mark 10:46-52. The blind beggar was stuck with what seemed like no help or hope. Here’s what he did:

1. 46. Don’t wait for ideal circumstances. Focus on what you can do differently then be proactive.

2. 47. Take personal responsibility. The solution might be right in front of you. Look for it.

3. 48. Stop caring about what others think. You might have to walk away from poor influences.

4. 49. Believe God stops for “beggars”. Be honest and earnestly seek God’s help. He’s ready.

5. 50. Take a bold step. Cast off the familiar, do something different, repent, believe, act.

6. 51. Be specific. What do you want and what are you willing to do the get there? Go big!

7. 52. Follow Jesus. Make no plan or provision to go back. Yield to what His word says.

Whatever your rut or ditch, if what you’re doing isn’t working, STOP. Sit down, Think biblically, Observe what’s not working and better alternatives within reach, and Plan a better direction.

When we get stuck, we might get stubborn. I’ll try harder, do more, give it more gas – and get more stuck. I’m not trying to be rude, but that’s kind of stupid, right?!

Maybe it’s time for more Jesus, less you.

Remember, there’s ditches on both sides of the road. God’s way will keep you in the middle and out of a rut. The blind beggar decided to follow Jesus in the way, and it worked!

Take a minute and ask, what am I doing that’s keeping me stuck or making things worse? Now ask, what do I really want that would align with God’s word and signal a desire to change?

Be honest, choose humility, and then cry out to God no matter what anyone else thinks. You’ll stop God in His tracks. He’s willing to help those who are ready to get out of their rut and take a risk.
