This One Common Mistake Can Cost You Far More Than You’ll Want to Pay
You won’t like when God breaks these, but you’ll thank Him later...
When she broke the ashtray against the wall, it stopped. My brothers were fighting, and mom had enough! We’ve never forgotten that day! Sometimes things must be broken to get our attention.
In 2 Chr. 20:35-37, King Jehoshaphat is under intense pressure and about to make a bad decision. So, God broke his ships to get his attention, stop his progress, and rescue him from, well, himself!
He does that for you and me as well. Here’s what I mean. God will break some “ships” in your life before they take you off course and into troubled waters.
Some “ships” cost us dearly to build and far more after they’re built. God doesn’t mind the cost or inconvenience of breaking things that are going to hurt you creates. He’s for your greater good.
Maybe you’re seeking some unhealthy attention, attainment, or making alliances with people who don’t have your best interest at heart. They may be mistakes taking you in the wrong direction.
Look at the “ships” being broken in your life to see if God is doing it for your good? You know:
Relation-ships. Not all relationships are healthy or wise. Maybe it’s time to make a clean break.
Friend-ships. Toxic, sinful, or grossly imbalanced may be your clue it’s time to break it off.
Partner-ships. If it’s unequally yoked, illicit, contrary to scripture or godliness, let it go.
Workman-ship. What are you building and why? You can give your life to the wrong thing, right?
Marksman-ship. Whatever you aim at, you’ll hit. Examine your goals and adjust your sights.
Leader-ship. Who are you “following” and why? Break from voices that lead away from godliness.
Wor-ship. What idols define, excite or make demands of you? Self may be the biggest of them all.
Memberships, censorship, fellowship… I could go on, but you get the point. Evaluate the ships you’re presently building or planning to set sail and make the break if it isn’t going God’s way.
In 1 Kgs 22:48-49, another opportunity to build that alliance occurred. This time the answer was no!
Jehoshaphat wisely broke it off before it got started. Hard lessons don’t have to be repeated. What about you?
Like God, we break ships for good reason. But there’s one we must never break: Lord-ship. When Jesus is running the ship good things happen and we’ll end up in a much better place.
What ship might God be breaking right now that seems like a burden by may be a blessing? It’s not easy to admit, but there are some “ships” you need to break so you won’t end up in a bad place.
