When God Throws this Flag, You'll Regret Ignoring It

A connection missed in this familiar passage only makes the problem worse.

Here’s a connection you may have missed: Anxiety is a form of anger. It’s an argument with what did happen or might happen or should happen that controls the mind (thoughts) and heart (feelings).

We all struggle with anxious thoughts – they get in our head, and we can’t stop them. Or they get in our heart and the feelings spill out like a cup that was bumped – hard – into the lap of others.

Maybe you had a disagreement or some offense that you replay over and over, and you take it out on others, God, or even yourself. You’ll know because you start “shoulding” on yourself or others:

“I should have ____”, “I should never have ____”, or “you should ___”, “they should”… Stop!

Anxious thoughts are like a whistle in a game when an infraction occurs. It’s the flag that signals trouble.

God’s word tells us in Phil. 4:6-8 to avoid worry and anxiety, at all costs.

It’s okay to care, to show concern, to desire better in a situation. But to worry and allow anxiety to take over is God’s way of saying you’ve crossed a line and are out of bounds. You need help.

When you’re anxious, irritable, angry, consumed with negative thoughts and feelings, and in that death spiral of emotions, the feelings are flags God uses to tell you something deeper is going on.

Ignore them and things get worse. An antidote to those angry thoughts can be an attitude of trust in God’s word, not our worrying or self-will. We trust that God can do a better job than we can.

We’re making progress when peace replaces plotting, pontificating, and “shoulding”. The problem didn’t go away, but peace took control. God now governs the thoughts and feelings.

We don’t have to be thankful for the bad news or situation, but we can be thankful for family and friends who support us, and our God who is more than able and will use all things for good.

Gratitude becomes our new guide and guard that signals God is keeping our minds and hearts secure.

When peace that keeps your heart and mind through Christ Jesus takes over you won’t miss the anger, the anxiety, or spiraling thoughts and flood of emotions. Pay attention to the flag.

Give whatever’s going on to God – over and over again – until He finally and completely has it. Put it on His plate and leave it there. A peace you can’t explain will be the evidence that you have.

Confess to God that maybe you’re angry and it’s spilling out all over the place. You’ll know because peace inside and around you is not present.

If you’re giving it to God in prayer and praise and it won’t go away, it might be you’re still in control or out of control.

Maybe you need some help and God is showing you it’s time. Don’t ignore the flag.
