If This Warning Doesn’t Slow You Down, Your Bed of Sorrow Will

Before the sparks fly, you’ll want to consider these five things...

The warning light was red right before the engine on my lawn tractor blew up. I just had one row to mow… and didn’t make it! There are warnings we just shouldn’t ignore. Isa 50:10-11 has one.

Remember when Paul’s plan to go where lots of people lived, to preach the gospel, was frustrated by God? Paul’s desire was good, but it wasn’t better than God’s plan.

Thankfully Paul took time to discern God’s will instead of stubbornly “making something happen” in the frustration of the lack of clarity about what God was doing.

Have you done that? It seems like a good idea at the time, or you don’t feel like you have time, so you do what you think will work and like my engine, sparks! We find out the expensive way.

Time lost, opportunity missed, misunderstandings, life-altering choices, consequences. God gives us Isa. 50:10-11 to slow us down and discern God’s will before we push ahead.

If this warning doesn’t slow you down, your bed of sorrow will. Without a relationship with God’s word, you’ll struggle to know His revealed will.

When I posted about this on Instagram/FB @BibleViews2Use, the response was swift. So, here are five things you should ask when trying to discern God’s direction within the frustration:

1) Is it consistent with God’s character? Your passion doesn’t equal God’s approval.

2) Is it clearly confirmed by God’s word, in context? Don’t just look for agreeable words in Scripture. Remaining confined by context is the best way to maintain objectivity.

3) When you consulted with good, godly, objective counselors, did they affirm your decision?

4) Do circumstances permit without your forcing them, and is it clear that God is involved?

5) Is your conscience clear leaving you with peace and confidence about the decision?

If your decision is guided by these principles, you can move forward with confidence. If not, slow down before you lay down in a bed of sorrow. God doesn’t rush you, your flesh does.

Is a warning light flashing about some decision you or a loved one is making? Re-read Isa. 50:10-11. What does this good advice call you to (re)consider before the sparks fly?
