On Your Bad Day, Doing this One Thing Changes Everything. It’s not Prayer!
Jesus calls us to some very hard things – it’s normal – but what’s not normal is...
You’re having a bad day: it’s the traffic, a tough situation, a tragedy. Maybe your spouse, boss, child, that text or thing you’re putting off has you complaining. It could even be a stubbed toe!
Sitting with a friend I listened intently as they shared about a funeral, they recently attended that was so counterintuitive that it affected them deeply. A tragic loss was an occasion to thank God.
Who does that? Believers who understand worship do. Psalm 69:29-30 is one of those calls to the crucified life that when practiced shine like a rare diamond among dime-a-dozen Christianity.
We rightly speak and sing about the goodness of God. Yet we prove it by how we handle the setbacks, situations, sorrows – the things that don’t feel good. The hard things are a call to worship.
There’s a lot going on right? Good. Now you can give thanks instead of complaining and magnify the LORD! This is radical Christianity lived out in the raw things of life.
Those moments when gratitude seems egregious or counterintuitive are the moments you can most magnify Jesus – don’t miss them.
I’m not suggesting you suppress the raw emotion of the moment – stubbed toe, tragic loss, bad news, hard conversation, strained relationship, political differences - just convert it.
Find the good, give thanks. This is a command throughout scripture (Eph. 5:20, 1 Thes. 5:18, Phil 4:6, 2:14-16).
When your natural inclination is to murmur make yourself magnify God instead.
It might sound like, thank God “I have a toe to stub”; “can walk”; “have a car in this traffic jam”; “the time we had together”; or “someone to share life with who chooses to put up with me!”
You get the point. You don’t have to be thankful for it, but you can find thankworthy things in it.
You can magnify Jesus in the pain, problem or irritation, and are called to do so.
My friend was deeply impacted when believers chose to use their sorrow to worship a Saviour who never asks us to do something He wouldn’t do Himself. Giving thanks in everything is good.
Jesus gave thanks at the Lord’s Supper that pointed to His crucifixion and then also in Gethsemane on His way to Calvary. He suffered thankfully for your offenses and those who offend you…
When we choose the crucified life, we find life and become life-givers. Thankful Christians are a rare commodity. When we crucify our complaining the life of Christ shines through - brilliantly.
Take a moment to bring your kicking, screaming, complaining self to the cross and crucify it. You’ll know you’re “dead” when a thankful believer arises and brings life to those around you.
