“Now I understand why people give up on God”. The last several years have put my family through multiple difficult challenges. We all go through them, and these were rough.
“God got us through! Only He can.” That was the conclusion my battle-tested daughter and I reached as we reminisced while taking a drive to get her new washing machine.
But it doesn’t always go that way. We’ve seen many walk away from the faith because of what they’ve been through. And to be honest, I’ve been tempted myself more than once.
There were times when I doubted and questioned God and wanted to just give up. He knew that and was good with it. Here’s why. He knew what He was doing, I didn’t!
God takes us to the brink with baggage we weren’t meant to carry to teach us to trust Him with the load no matter what. It’s His method throughout Scripture (1 Cor. 10:13).
When John Baptist found himself in an unimaginable place, he doubted. He was at his breaking point and life wasn’t lifting a finger to help! He didn’t think God was either.
Life’s unfairness gets to us and opens the door to cynicism, skepticism and searching (Matt. 11:2-6). So, Jesus sends reassurance, not rebuke. He knows!
There’s a song Lorie (my college sweetheart and wife!) and I have leaned on called “Trusting Jesus.” The message is a lifeline: Trusting Jesus, that is all. (I found this version)
Psalm 119:49-50 sums up what I’m trying to say. Maybe it will help you. The Lord gives us enough from His word for the trials ahead before we need it. So don’t miss it.
You’ll need in your darkness what God gave you in the light. Your spiritual sanity may depend upon what you heard Sunday, read this morning in devotion or learned years ago.
Lean into and rest upon what God says, not how you feel. Life will be much easier with Jesus than without. Memorize 1 Cor. 10:13 before you need it, because you’ll need it!
Perhaps you’ve grown weary in the battle or in well-doing and wondering if it’s worth the effort. Maybe you’re losing faith that Jesus is the answer to the burden you’re carrying.
Maybe someone you care about is questioning God. When life is too heavy or too hard, don’t yield to the temptation to walk away; yoke to Jesus instead (Matt. 11:28-30).
He’s your remedy of first resort! Give it to Him and find rest for your soul.
My daughter and I agreed that going through the hard stuff can change your perspective and give you greater compassion toward those who’ve walked away.
When life is piling on the baggage and won’t lift a finger to help, you’re not alone in the experience. God knows what He’s doing even when we don’t.
Pay attention to what God has been saying or showing you lately or has brought you through in the past (Romans 15:4). You might need it sooner than you think.
Become an email minister by sharing these with others! Your kindness might land at just the right time for someone you care about.

Some Thoughts to Help Take Today’s Message a Little Deeper
What God says “behind your back” is good. He thinks good about you and your trial is more likely for His good purposes and not your punishment.
While Jesus was sending John reassurance, He was calling others to reassess. God’s “why” is much bigger than what we imagine (Matt. 11:7-15)
God’s character, not your circumstances determines His approval of you. No matter what you face or feel, you’re accepted & secure in Christ (Eph. 1:3-14)
It’s okay to question God. Just beware that false beliefs you harbor toward God or yourself will make their appearance in the moments of doubting. Don’t allow them to have the final say. Check everything against the truth of God’s word.
