The Piece of Spiritual Armor You Probably Forget to Put On

It’s not what you think, without it you’ll have a hard time, and these five things help...

In partnership with

Arm yourselves! Those who choose a righteous life face a relentless and ruthless foe. The Psalmist makes his complaint about why good men suffer and those who could care less seem so care-free!

When we go through struggles our world gets smaller and we tend to ask better questions. Why does God allow good people to suffer so much? It attacks our sense of security and sanity.

That righteous man Job is a good example. God allowed Satan to destroy his finances, family, physical and emotional well-being, and send friends that Job labeled “miserable comforters”!

Here’s a good question. How did Job survive and later thrive in his struggles? Peter’s answer is “Arm yourselves”! Going through hard stuff is part of God’s good plan. Don’t protest, prepare!

The believer must have a mind to suffer. Expect it and embrace it – it’s your helmet in the hardship! When you do, you ascend to the higher ground where you can eventually enjoy it – like Jesus, Paul, and Job!

Arm yourselves! Put on the knowledge that good people suffer and it’s part of our calling (1 Pet. 2:20-23).

There are some ways to prepare for this battle before it strikes and be sustained in it.

First, Fight the lies. Instead of listening to your feelings, foes, and friends, tell yourself what the word of God says. Our deepest loses bring our greatest opportunities to demonstrate true worship.

Second, find the Lord in it by searching His Word. When David faced his Ziklag, and Job sat on his ash heap, both encouraged themselves in the Lord. We learn through painful experiences, “It’s better to trust in the LORD”.

Next, keep walking. Focus on what is left, not what is lost. You still have the Lord, you have hope in His promises, you have others counting on you… be proactive and keep moving.

And while you’re walking, work. Faithfully labor on. Take initiative and stay in the fight! I have learned that failure does not define a person, what one does with failure defines them.

And then comes the final and arguably the hardest part: Wait. Finish looking up. Like Job, David, Paul and multitudes through the centuries, the blessings are in the final chapter so endure with joy. Jesus is coming soon!

Arm yourselves likewise, and may the Lord bless you as you serve Him in these perilous times and whatever hardship you presently face.
