When She Walked in The Room You Could Feel the Tension
What’s she doing here? I’ll never forget it, and neither should you
When she walked in, the spirit in the room changed. You could feel the tension and it wasn’t good. “What’s she doing here?” If you were in that room, you’d never forget it. I sure can’t!
In Luke 7, there’s something you’d do well to never forget. To understand the story, you’d have to imagine being in a room full of critical, judgmental, and self-righteous people.
For some, that sounds like home, church, or work. Where’s that place for you? A name comes up, a person walks in, and the knives come out – maybe it’s the glances, expressions, or the coldness.
But this woman is beyond caring what others think of her – and frankly, it’s refreshing!
Her attitude amazes everyone in that room. If you were in this gospel story, who would you resemble most?
Some are cold to the needs of “sinners” and critical of how Jesus receives them.
Perhaps one had “dealings” with her and needs some boundaries now while struggling with guilt or forgiveness.
But then there is the woman who risks it all to get to the feet of Jesus – and worships purely.
She needs acceptance, craves forgiveness, knows exactly where to find it, and won’t be deterred. Wow!
Jesus is also there showing concern for everyone in the room while dealing with each need accordingly.
While some needed to be corrected, she needed comfort, not condemnation.
We who believe and claim “Christ in us” have a responsibility to reveal what the gospel is and does and offer it freely to those who need it most: Sinners like you and me – and every other kind!
Next time she walks in the room, remember for whom Jesus reserved His lecture and who left forgiven.
Sure, they don’t live right, caused trouble in the past, and don’t fit in with the group…
…they also might find it difficult to walk into your home, church, or workplace.
Yet when we act more like Jesus, the spirit in the room can change for the better. That’s what the gospel does!
We who believe are placed by Christ strategically to make forgiveness accessible, tangible, and meaningful. When we see her through the eyes of Christ, we’ll see a soul in need, not a “sinner”.
To understand the gospel is to see yourself as her. You fled to Christ needing forgiveness, not laws, not lectures, and you didn’t let anyone else in the room inhibit you. And received it freely!
Who is it in your circles that needs to encounter Christ when they walk into the room?
Maybe it’s you. Whoever it is, decide now to be Jesus in the room instead of all your other options.
