Over the weekend I attended a reunion of sorts. Most of us call it a funeral but you run into so many people that amid the “goodbye” is a whole bunch of “hellos”!
But some I expected and hoped to see weren’t there and no doubt for good reason.
Rick loved people and left his mark in ministry to others by being a disciple-maker. He chose to make a difference by pouring into one life at a time over his lifetime.
The place was packed and stories were shared!
He risked the messiness of ministry and like the apostle Paul, could tell stories about those who were good investments, served faithfully, and yet of others who fell away.
For one named Demas, Paul chose words like companion and co-laborer to describe him.
The word everyone chose for Rick was “faithful”.
Rick served others and showed up, faithfully. Leaders could trust him, others depended upon him and he was willing to get involved even if it was inconvenient or messy.
His funeral got me thinking about some of those who didn’t show up. What happened to them and where are they now?
Some couldn’t be there for good reasons. Others just stopped showing up.
It happened to Paul too. When he was in need and courageously facing his funeral he said of Demas, “having loved this present world, is departed" and leaves us wondering.
Was it a dramatic departure? Did the demands, inconvenience and messiness of ministry discourage him? Did someone offend him or damage his ego or hurt him?
Was he drawn away by things he dabbled with that tightened their grip and took hold?
Perhaps it was a slow drift by a thousand distractions, to-do’s or selfish desires.
Whatever happened Demas is now called carnal. It can happen to you and me too. He stopped showing up when others needed him and it was no doubt for the wrong reason.
Faithful or fallen away is a choice whether to love Jesus more and stay engaged or depart.
At Rick’s funeral no one wondered what happened to him. Everyone knew. He loved Jesus more and invested in others – risk, messiness, inconvenience, hurts and all.
We all witnessed and were beneficiaries of his faithfulness and showed up to thank him. Not one person in that packed auditorium wondered where he was. We all knew.
He was in glory with Jesus and no doubt heard, “well done”.
But Demas? We have doubts. No one knows if he was saved or not and God’s word about him and his choices leave us wondering.
Some start strong but fall away. It’s your decision to make.
That’s the problem when you choose carnal over Christ. It leaves those left behind wondering. Were they or weren’t they saved? What happened, and where are they now?
Rick and Paul made their choice and faithful was the final word (2 Tim. 4:7-8). If you’re leaving anyone in doubt, today’s the day to show back up. It’s worth the risk, others need you and when you’re not around you’re missed. I’d love to hear how this landed today.
