Before jumping in, you’ll get more out of this post if you read Genesis 31:1-21, Genesis 30:25-43. You’ll find the principles in this post in these passages. See if you can find all seven of them!
I decided I wanted to be a fire fighter, so I joined. I was young, impulsive and made it happen. I do that a lot. I know how to get things done and so I do.
Like a firefighter, I can kick doors open and get the job done. But that’s not really a good plan when you’re making a tough decision or trying to discern God’s will.
Jacob was a door kicker. He liked to be in control and got a lot done in the flesh – “now”.
But in Gen. 31 he wised up when facing a tough decision and really needed God involved.
Seven things aligned that helped him discern it was time to make his move. They’ll help you too if you look for them before you make your move on a decision:
1. Circumstances have changed and there’s an inner motivation to make a move. The relationships have shifted or something feels very different and it has your attention.
2. Confirmations from God’s word seem to find you every time you pick up the word or hear a message. God’s speaking and you’re starting to notice he’s talking to you.
3. Carefully, you search the Scriptures to make sure what you’re hearing is true to all that God’s word says about it, in context, and is consistent with His character.
4. Concerns and questions arise about how your decision will affect others including the future, not just the here and now. When you consult with them, they’re on board too.
5. Convinced you “can’t stay in this place” you pray and ask God to arrange things in your favor and take away the desire to stay. And he begins to do so! Slowly.
6. Conscientiously you remain diligent, faithful, dependable and quiet about your plans. You keep your testimony sound while waiting patiently for God to give you the nod.
7. Circumstances permit. It took a while, but the “stars aligned” and you have a clear path forward and peace about doing so. It’s time and you know it. So, you go!
After kicking a lot of doors in, I’ve learned by experience it’s better to do things God’s way. There’s less emotion getting in the way and better judgment to guide the way. It’s easier to see clearly when walking in light.
And here’s the thing. No matter what happens on the journey you’ll know God goes with you. It’s His will not yours, and you can confidently pursue it when you face some bumps in the road.
If you’d like to keep a tough decision from turning into a bad one, look for these seven things to align so you’ll know you’re in line with God’s will and do so in His time.
I wrote a short free guide as my gift to you with seventeen practical tips on how to know your decision is aligning with God's will. Seven of them were in this post, get the rest of them here.
