Enjoy today’s read!

Before jumping in, reading this passage will help you get more out of today’s read 2 Sam. 15 & 16.

I came across a someone I hadn’t thought of in quite some time. They were a person of character and competence. A good friend.

You might know someone like them. They’re the go-to person when you’re:

In need advice

Working through a situation

In Trouble

Looking for another set of eyes on a decision you need to make.

They’re the close friend, confidant, and friend you can always count on to show up.

But then something shifts.

They’re quiet.

Distant.

Avoiding your texts and calls.

You wonder, what’s wrong with them?

King David had a guy like that in his life. Here’s what the Bible says about this man who showed up when David needed him:

2 Sam. 16:23. “And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God:

Who wouldn’t want someone like that on their side? You need someone like this.

But like I said, something changed.

Ahithophel joins a conspiracy against David and would like nothing more than to see him crushed. He even volunteered to lead the charge!

Who’s that person in your life right now?

They probably don’t plan to ruin you, but maybe they’re withdrawn, quiet – avoiding you. And you wonder what’s wrong with them?

David knew what was wrong and did nothing about it. It wasn’t them; it was him.

He did something he shouldn’t have done.

He wouldn’t own up to it and make it right.

He let it sit heavy in the relationship.

He thought it would go away or fix itself.

And like you and me, maybe he was afraid to face himself.

What you’ve said or done.

Why you’re okay leaving it unresolved.

What you now know you’re capable of.

David took this man’s granddaughter, got her pregnant, killed her husband to cover it up, and took her to be his wife. Her name was Bathsheeba.

His good friend and counselor’s granddaughter! What’s wrong with them? What’s wrong with him?

You can read the gory details about it in 2 Sam. 11:1-17, 11:3, 23:34, 15:12, 31, 17:1-4.

But this isn’t about Ahithophel and David. It’s about you and that person who’s distant, withdrawn, quiet or avoiding your calls and texts. What’s wrong with them?

You probably know.

Or it might be you who’s pulled back, upset or hurt.

Either way, maybe it’s time to take the initiative to reach out.

To have the difficult conversation.

To apologize.

To take the steps to make it right.

To not wait for them to do it.

And if you really don’t know what’s causing the shift, be the friend and find out what’s wrong with them.
