A Risk You Won’t Regret

A friend of mine missed an appointment to his MLB tryout! It was his opportunity of a lifetime but showed up too late! The regret haunted him for decades.

Missing something important – that interview, opportunity, or big event can make us feel like “it’s too late” for me. Maybe you’re getting older and feel like you’ve “missed it”.

The man who wrote 14 books of the Bible was late coming to faith. To his credit and our benefit, he chose not to waste any time knowing, growing, and going for God.

God uses late comers of all kinds. When you know the Lord, it’s never too late. Paul is our proof and encourages us no matter our season of life (here).

To know Paul’s story is to know he was a “problem” before he was persuaded to follow and serve the Lord. But once persuaded he could not be silenced or sit on the sidelines.

Paul is like many of us. He regrets what he was and did but can’t go back in time to fix it. Instead of living in bondage to a past we cannot change we, like Paul, choose a new response to it (v. 10)!

What’s behind us may feel like wasted years. But God is wasting none of it. He uses people who are “sure” it’s too late or their mistakes disqualify them.

He uses once cynical, skeptical, sinful or slothful people who can own their past mistakes, missed opportunities, and regrets and let them fuel a more productive future.

Isaiah comes to mind. In Isaiah chapter 1-5, he unloads on God’s people who’ve gotten under his skin! He sounds angry.

Instead of rebuking the prophet, God offers him a fresh glimpse of the glory of Jesus (Isa. 6:1-8). When we take responsibility for our own hypocrisy we see new opportunity.

We all have some sin of our own to deal with, some regrets, and missed opportunities that taunt us still. Well, you can’t go back. But you can choose a new path forward.

If you’ve lost some zeal for the Lord, do what David did here and Paul did here. God uses late comers, in fact, they are uniquely prepared to make a lasting impact.

Whatever your age or ability, choose not to waste any more of your life. Whatever you have right now is enough and when you give it to God it will be more than enough!

Some Thoughts To Help You GO DEEPER with Today’s Message

Acts 26:9-20. Paul testified to his own horrible and regretful past. Yet we learned that he chose to use it to motivate a more productive future even though he was late to the “game”. What regrets can become great motivators for you?

The aged Nicodemus sought Jesus secretly (John 3:1-8), then stood subtly (7:50-53), but then served selflessly after seeing Jesus high and lifted up at Calvary (19:33-40).

Nicodemus finally understood not only who Jesus was, but was finally able to apply it personally. How might seeing Jesus “dying for you” change how you openly identify with Him?

John 20:24-29. A man who served with Jesus for years got discouraged and doubtful. Yet Jesus met Thomas where he was and helped him believe again. How might He do that for you? Go ahead and talk to Jesus about it right now.

It doesn’t matter what opportunities of a lifetime you’ve missed or regrets you carry with you. God uses late comers who are ready to let go of the past and use it to motivate their future. Let’s do this!

Cheering for you!
