Enjoy today’s read!

Yesterday, my pastor shared how someone in our life-group believed and received Christ. Wow! Prayers answered, a life forever changed, a generation potentially impacted!

The benefits of pouring what Christ has given us into others are boundless. What makes life in Christ even better is telling and teaching others who Jesus is and what He’s done.

Jesus said something that struck me deeply as I read this morning. It’s in Luke 22:32 where Jesus tells Peter that when he is converted, “strengthen the brethren.”

When he’s converted? What’s that all about?

Anyway, He also commended the other disciples for being “they which have continued with me in my temptations.” (v. 28). Submitting to fellowship and life together is vital, not optional!

Jesus told Peter that He was praying for him (v. 32). He knew that desiring to live for God is easier said than done. The temptations come strong; and Satan is relentless.

When my pastor told of that new name written down in heaven, the one we’ve been praying for, pulling for, hoping for, and pouring the love and truth of Christ into…

…besides rejoicing, the next words out of my mouth were, “it’s so much better when God does it”.

We pour into others, walk with them in their temptations, pray, love, remain available, patient, and kind… and then God does something amazing – His timing not ours (1 Cor. 3:5-9).

One of the greatest privileges we have as believers is building up others in the faith.

So, back to what struck me deeply about Christ’s words to Peter.

Who am I actively talking with about Jesus, and to whom am I actively teaching the ways of Jesus:

Strengthening, continuing with them in their temptations, praying over their battles?

Could I be so bold as to ask the same of you? You’ll go deeper and grow stronger in your faith by pouring what God is giving you into others. It’s how your fellowship grows.

I write this newsletter with you in mind. With the hope that it is a help to your walk of faith.

I pray it’s also a tool you can use to experience the joy and eternal benefit of strengthening the brethren. Here’s one thing I know for sure:

Each of us knows more about Jesus and the Bible than someone – even if you’re new to the faith! So, find someone who knows more to teach you and someone you can teach.

It’s called discipleship. It gets even better when we take that additional step of humility and find someone to pour into us while we pour into others. What’s that look like for you?

In the GO DEEPER section below I’ve given an often used but helpful illustration of the benefit of discipleship and a couple other verses to ponder. Enjoy!

GO DEEPER with Today’s Message:

The Jordan River is a key geographical feature in the Bible. It flows out of Mt. Hermon (Syria) into the Sea of Galilee and all the way to the Dead Sea (Israel/Jordan). You’ll find abundant life and community where it flows into and out of the Sea of Galilee. But, where it flows into the Dead Sea and stops – well, death. Nothing grows. You’re one or the other. When the word is both pouring in and out of you – life – a “Sea of Galilee” Christian. Where the word pours in but is not shared with others – death – a “Dead Sea” Christian. You get to choose which type of Christian you’ll be. Discipleship and evangelism are the process of water in, water out.

You’ll have to be intentional about growing in your faith and helping others grow in theirs. Discipleship is part of the great commission (Matt. 28:19-20).

Ask your pastor how you can engage in being discipled by someone who knows more than you and then who you can pour that knowledge and experience into.

I’ve also found it helpful in my 30+ year walk to find those whose Christianity I admire and aspire to emulate and ask them for advice and if they’d be willing to disciple me.

If you’d like to study a man in the Bible who is an excellent example of pouring himself into others in the form of discipleship study Barnabas (Acts 4:36, 9:26-27, 11:19-30, etc). There’s many more in Acts, study them all!

To build up other believers is to be like Jesus – it’s how we demonstrate Christlike love (Gal. 6:1-2, Rom. 15:1-6).

Jesus started Christianity with only twelve and His discipleship method of shared life still works! The Apostle Paul emphasized discipleship as well (Phil. 4:9, 2 Tim. 2:1-2).

Cheering for you!
