I Thought it Was Dead
When I visited this grave again, it was empty and I was...
It’s really good to see you here! Thanks for subscribing!
A missionary friend of mine wrote a quick encouragement to help you fall in love with reading your Bible again. It’s free, but won’t be here for long. Grab it today.
If you’re not using the hyperlinks for the Scripture references, check them out. They’ll definitely help you get more out of the two-minute read.
Your replies bless my soul! Keep ‘em coming. If you haven’t replied to an email yet, just shoot me a quick thought about today’s post.
I’ve added a trivia question near the bottom. Wow! A lot of you got it right, and quickly! But Sharon Sheldon got it first! Way to go Sharon! Who’ll win today?
Let me know how I can help you get the most out of this newsletter. It’s for you!
Maybe you’ve had the same experience.
You’re reading a familiar passage and for some reason it lands differently in the moment.
Jesus is raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11). Familiar passage to most.
I don’t know, maybe this is so familiar we run the risk of just reading past what the Spirit wants us to see or hear from Him. For me, today, it’s:
What were you convinced was “dead” but now has life?
Visiting the “empty graves” in my life gives me hope for the ones that Jesus has yet to visit and call out:
~32 years ago, my marriage looked “dead” until God showed up. We just celebrated 42 years together!
When God had other plans for my life, my business “died” --- only to bring forth my pastoral ministry!
A few years ago, my wife’s cancer looked like it would win. It hasn’t.
I was sure the struggles loved ones faced would “kill” them only to see them shake off the grave clothes stronger and thriving as a result.
Recently my life as “pastor” ended. I had a funeral for what I had given so much of my life to. But then came forth this newsletter ministry reaching thousands!
What’s does life from death look like for you? It might be something big. It might also be getting back to prayer, time in the word, or fellowship.
You’ll have to go through some “near death” or “I’m sure it’s over” moments to see God doing a new or miraculous work in your life. And when He does, mark that empty grave.
You’ll need to revisit it later when what seems too far gone will require a stop at an old familiar passage of Scripture where the Spirit calls and says…,
(it’s probably better if you read the familiar passage for yourself John 11:25-27, 43-45).
Whatever “it” is, it’s not over until Jesus says it is. Mary was sure Lazarus was dead. She had all the proof she needed (v. 39). But Jesus had other plans (v. 40-42).
Some things, they need to remain “buried”. We grieve, we accept, and we move on. God give us wisdom! But others might just need a little more time so God can get His glory.
Revisit the “empty graves” in your life so you can be encouraged and full of belief when God’s ready to call your “Lazarus” to come forth.
Send me a reply or use the poll below to let me know your thoughts! Forward it to a friend or two who might be encouraged by it.
In the GO DEEPER section below I’ve given a few more biblical examples of “they thought it was dead” moments. The Trivia question will be a helpful challenge today.

Thanks for Reading!

GO DEEPER with Today’s Message:
Write down some things in your life that feel hopeless or a foregone conclusion.
Now, give them to God, one by one, in prayer. You can ask that His will be done while giving you the wisdom, patience, and hope that He knows best and will do what’s best.
Revisit other times in your experience that seemed hopeless or “dead” that turned around or turned out better than you imagined. Now, submit your imaginations to Jesus (2 Cor 10:3-5).
I really like these verses in times of uncertainty (Though familiar, read them afresh):
Isa. 43:1-5, 26:3, Phil. 4:6-8, 2 Cor 10:3-5. False beliefs are poor guides and never let your feelings lead your thoughts (Pro. 16:3, 3:5-6).
I wrote this about funerals and burials awhile back and many thought it was helpful.
Some Examples to Get You Started (How many others can you think of?)
A single mom who reached her limits (1 Kings 17:12-16)
Jeremiah was in the pits (Jer 38:7-13), so was David (Psa. 40:1-5)
A father who could take no more (Mark 9:20-27)
A mother’s grief (Luke 7:12-16)
A wayward child (Luke 15:32)
TRIVIA QUESTION:
Name an example from Scripture (not already found in the GO DEEPER section) of “they thought it was dead”. (I’ll give some shoutouts in the next newsletter!)
