Who is the godliest person that you know? You admire their faith, humility, spiritual composure and consistency. Maybe they hold a leadership position of some kind.

Now picture yourself sitting with them for coffee. A little small talk, then out of nowhere they confess their problem with evil desires – you know, lust.

What would you do? Hopefully, you wouldn’t sound shocked and say, no way, not you, or look disappointed or think “I can’t believe it”. No lectures, no laws, platitudes or judgment.

Covetousness is idolatry clothed in secret desires (Col. 3:5). And we all have them.

Now, what if that godly person sitting with you was Paul, the guy who wrote half of the New Testament books?

It is (Rom. 7:8, 14). Paul struggled with lust? Yup. And a whole lot more.

But who could someone like Paul tell and where could he turn? In Romans, he’s not telling Jesus, he’s telling other believers. He’s telling you and me. Who does that?

Experienced believers do that. They don’t hide sin; they deal with it honestly (Pro. 28:13).

Look carefully at his confession. He said “all manner of” selfish, evil desires. Not him! Not her! Yes, him, her and you, me, and those with whom we fellowship (1 John 1:6-10).

Paul is refreshingly transparent. He knew that the law was not his savior. Though good, it cannot mitigate the sin problem; it only magnifies it (Rom. 7:13). Others need to know that.

Sincere believers struggle with feelings of condemnation and letting the Lord down. We get burdened with a voice saying, “how could I think, say, do this”? Sound familiar?

We need reminders that these feelings are normal (v. 15-21), but not necessary (v. 22-25, 8:1-4)! Paul uses his experience for our benefit, and we can do that too.

Paul is the godliest person I know and he struggled with evil desires. I do too. If he and I were sitting for coffee neither of us would be surprised, shocked, or disappointed.

I don’t know, but maybe it’s time for that cup of coffee. We all need to make a safe place where we can unburden ourselves of the law that condemns and load we carry (Gal. 6:1-3).

Next time you’re sitting with someone struggling with the problem of evil don’t point them to the law, point them to the Lord where grace abounds (Rom. 5:20-21, 1 John 2:1-2).

It’s what experienced believers do.

Paul reminds us that humility toward our own sinfulness encourages others who struggle with theirs. I’m a bit of a coffee snob so, Italian roast with pumpkin spice please.

I’ve really loaded the GO DEEPER section below because so many struggle with this issue. You’ll definitely want to share this with others you care about. Let me know your thoughts. I’m cheering for you 😊

If You Would Like to GO DEEPER with Today’s Message:

A little disclaimer. This post is about the voice of condemnation that plagues sincere believers. It’s not a discussion about other issues concerning habitual sin or salvation. That’s all way beyond the scope of this intentionally short read.

For many reasons, life experiences can shape and reaffirm false beliefs about God and yourself. Feelings of condemnation is how the enemy keeps believers in bondage.

Write down some ways you feel or hear condemnation or that plaguing sense of never measuring up to God’s standard. By the way, you can’t so stop trying so hard.

Romans 7 helps us understand that the voice of shame and condemnation is not God. It’s you, your conscience, the law, or the Enemy of your soul.

I’ve found it helpful to be reminded that the law was given to point out our failure but never lifts a finger to help.

That’s why we need Jesus and His help in time of need (Heb. 4:16, 1 John 1:9, 2:1-2)!

Paul begins by reminding us we are no longer bound to law once we’re in Christ (Rom. 7:1-6,10:4). Take some time to thank God that Jesus is now your head and help. He’s much better.

In v. 15-21 Paul is honest about a very real battle. Wherever he goes, the evil within goes with him. It’s true for you and me too. So, he takes the truth with him every step (v. 22-25, 8:1-4).

Talk to God about your battles with sin and the voice of condemnation. Ask the Holy Spirit to replace any false beliefs about who you are in Christ with the truth:

You are neither condemned (Rom. 8:1) nor condemnable (Eph. 1:4, 5-7). You are complete in Christ (Col. 2:10-15) and a new creature (2 Cor. 5:17).

Instead of “trying harder”, yield to (rest in) what God says is true of you. In Christ, there’s nothing left to “do”. God’s done it all. All your condemnation was placed on Christ.

Paul drives this point home in Romans 6. You need to know that you were placed into Christ’s death, burial and raised in newness of life – His. The condemnable you is gone. Being born again does that. Jesus did that! For you (Rom. 5:6-11)!!

Remind yourself that you have a new identity with a new past, present, and future. In Christ there’s no condemnation. When you replace false beliefs, the truth will make you free!

I wrote these posts awhile back for people who struggle with trying to be obedient or with self-condemnation. Many found it helpful, Here’s the link and Here.
