Odds Are Against You on This One

And God calls this one of the first steps toward being self-centered and...

Jesus asks a stunning, and frankly troubling question in Luke 17:11-19. It’s in v. 17.

One of your greatest revelations about Jesus will be that when you reach out to Him, you’ll never be the same. At least you shouldn’t be.

I like to put myself in the place of the different characters in a biblical narrative. What would I do if I was there, that person, or was asked this question? Try it, it’s helpful.

Would you agree that Jesus goes out of His way to bless others like you, me, and her?

In what ways has Jesus gone out of His way for you? Think about this statistic:

Jesus said that nine out of ten who cry, and He blesses don’t bother to thank Him. Nine out of ten. Where does that put you and me? In the crowd or in the company of one?

Occasionally, it’s fair to ask, who am I most like? The one who says, “thank you” to Jesus when we sense His presence, blessing, or guidance, or the other nine who don’t.

If you’ve experienced the sting of going out of your way to bless another only to be met with ingratitude, you can get into Jesus’ shoes here and feel deeply what He’s saying.

Where are the nine? He just heard the cry of ten desperate and isolated souls, met them in their deepest needs, then miraculously healed them, and… crickets.

One of the first steps toward a self-centered and destructive life is ingratitude (Rom. 1:21). Read on in Romans 1 and you’ll better understand what’s happening in our society.

Certainly no one deserves to receive glory and hear “Thank you” more than Jesus who has given us life, breath, and hope in this life and the life to come.

Unless we are intentional, we’ll take our everyday blessings and forget to thank God. Yet every now and then, Jesus gets praise from a most unlikely source (v. 15-16).

The one everyone felt least entitled to Jesus’ mercy and grace was the one who received it and gave the most praise. But it wasn’t the praise that surprised Jesus most (v. 18-19).

What are you thankful for but forgot to give God thanks for? What are you waiting for? The odds are stacked against being thankful, so why not be the one in ten right now?

I’ve added some extra verses to help you give thanks in the GO DEEPER section below.

Some Thoughts To Help You GO DEEPER with Today’s Message

Psalm 69:30. Think about the times you’ve learned about gratitude from an unlikely source. How did that feel? What can you do to be that source for others?

Psalm 107:19-21. Which of the three verses most represents you right now? What can you do right now to live in v. 21?

Psalm 100. When are people most likely to praise and thank God? Forget God? When is it easiest for you?

Ephesians 5:20, 1 Thes. 5:18. Taken together, these verses remind us we can always find something to be thankful for. Think about what you are least thankful for right now and find something worthy of gratitude to God. Now give it.

For Prayer:

Consider the many blessings from God that you overlook or take for granted. Thank God for them and ask Him to bring others to mind. Pray for a more consistently thankful heart and eyes to see His hand of blessing even in the routine things.

Cheering for you!
