Before jumping in, you’ll get more out of this post if you read Matthew 18:21-35 first.
“Put your seatbelt on”. Those words from a concerned seven-year-old likely saved his older brother’s life. He had fallen asleep and just moments later it happened.
We were on our way to a friend’s house for dinner and the intoxicated driver who hit us doing 55mph had fallen asleep. In an instant our lives radically changed.
We were hit so hard that all the doors but mine were flung open.
Our old van was driven through a six-inch concrete curb and several feet onto the grass and facing the opposite direction with smoke, a grinding sound and lots of commotion.
As I sat trapped, taking in what little air I could, I watched my family gather while others frantically moved around. A police officer was arresting the driver who hit us.
I also remember thinking it was the last time I’d see my family. The only thing between the Cadilac that hit us and me was the driver’s door and I was feeling all of it.
When the fire department got me out, I was transported to the hospital separately and kept from my family for hours. One of my children was taken to a different hospital.
It took a while to recover, and we were never quite the same. God had spared us and the man that hit us was in a lot of trouble. The medical and emotional expense was high.
What a scene.
It even made the front page of the newspaper.
What a wreck!
We were told it would “be worth a lot”.
What would you do with him?
You might not agree but we chose not to sue. Instead, we wrote him, forgave him and asked that he replace the vehicle he totaled with one of similar value.
We knew he needed Jesus, and this was as good an opportunity as any to tell him!
He reached out after a few days amazed, dazed, confused… and no doubt relieved.
It took a couple weeks for him to find the right replacement and finally delivery day arrived. He was bringing our “new” vehicle, and his brother was his ride home.
We sat drinking coffee and eating pie with the man that nearly killed us and forever changed our lives.
And Jesus joined us at our kitchen table that day.
As I shared our personal testimony of coming to Christ with this broken man, his brother (a five-time DWI recipient and now a believer) cried and pleaded with him to be saved.
What a scene.
What a wreck.
What a Savior.
We don’t know what he decided and eventually lost contact.
I don’t know what you would do, but I’ve never regretted what we chose to do. In that surreal scene out of our lives it felt as though we were like Jesus wanted us to be (2 Cor. 8:9).
And we did what Jesus wanted us to do (Matt. 18:21-35).
What’s that worth?
Here’s my question to you this week: Where might it be time to be like Jesus wants you to be and do what He wants you to do? If you’re willing, reply and share it with me. I’d love to hear from you and read every email.
