Enjoy today’s read!

When we live under the constant barrage of destructive forces trying to take down the values we love, it’s not uncommon to struggle under the weight of it.

If we’re not diligent we can allow ourselves to become disinterested and slide into spiritual decline. It’s under these conditions Nehemiah is faced with a challenge:

Rebuild what sin has ruined and bring needed reform among people who in the absence of godly leadership forgot what they promised God and His faithfulness to them.

The demands of the everyday life and then the extraordinary difficulties we face can wear us down and the cravings of our carnality may cause us to slip into spiritual decline.

It’s under these circumstances Nehemiah takes decisive and instructive action. You might find it helpful in preventing or recovering from the spiritual decline in or around you.

Here, he carefully considers what is inconsistent with what he knows to be God’s clear will for himself and his people. It will take some courage to put away questionable things.

Here, he shows his contempt. You might not want to adopt his method, but his motive was clear. Righteous indignation can flame up the fervency to dispel our lukewarmness.

And here, he goes to war with what threatens the next generation. There are things believers cannot tolerate! So don’t! Wage the war against sin in your life without wavering.

Here, he calls upon God for help taking the steps needed for correction. While spiritual decline is normal, staying there is not. Some things must go for godliness to return.

You don’t have to agree with Nehemiah’s beliefs or methods, but we can all benefit from his zeal for what makes for a healthier spiritual life for ourselves and those we love.

Real people, with real problems, can make real progress in restoring what sin has ruined. Go ahead and recover God's priorities as you pray, “Remember me, O my God, for good!”

Take a moment to identify the distractions and defilements in your life that have kept you from prioritizing what pleases Jesus and active pursuit of time in His word and prayer.

It’s a good start toward reversing the inevitable times of spiritual decline. I’m pulling for you!

In the GO DEEPER section below you’ll find some good Scriptures to meditate on that go along with today’s theme. I think they’ll strengthen your resolve to avoid the spiritual ruts.

2.    The Contempt - 25-26. See also: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 7:1, 8-11.

3.    The Combativeness - 27-28. See also: James 4:1-4, 1 John 2:15-17

4.    The Correction - 29-31. See also: Jeremiah 10:23-24, Psalm 139:23-24.
