The toothache was so bad it went to the bone. Bone pain. If you’ve had it, there’s no hiding it and you never want it again! Why do we wait to go to the dentist!

Some of us get uncomfortable talking about pain – whether it’s our own or another’s. But it is part of life, and we can’t afford to invalidate real experiences that need relief.

There are things we all go through and try as we might, they can’t be hidden – and that’s okay. Like when what’s hidden hinders relationships, well-being, the job or other responsibilities.

We hide losses, offenses, emotional wounds, tragedies, rejections, life-altering events, sin, and more. But unattended toothaches fester, build pressure, and won’t be ignored.

I admire the abundant life of King David – the man after God’s own heart, the sweet psalmist of Israel… used greatly by God.

Read Psalm 32 and you’ll see that the man of great exploits was also a man of great emotions. His private life was masked by his public life. We do that, don’t we. But in the Psalms, it all pours out.

David buried a painful event. Probably many. He puts up a good front but there is something he’s hiding and it’s doing real damage. Have you done that? Maybe right now?

None of us likes to get or feel hurt. What we do with pain makes the difference between a life that is abundant (even in the struggles) and one that is abysmal.

We hurt because of things others have done to us, we’ve done to others, sin, things we’ve gone through… they’re significant and need not be invalidated.

Left uncared for these wounds become infected and negatively influence our quality of life and relational health. Sooner or later these buried wounds fester like puss from an abscess (sorry!).

You can only bury so much before it goes to the bone (Psa. 32:3) It then bubbles up and out into your beliefs about yourself and others, God, and into your behaviors, relationships, work…

David spent too much time in that place and can’t afford to stay there - neither can you no matter how well it seems to work (v. 1-2). Jesus calls us to get it out so He can bring relief (v. 3-6).

Don’t miss something very important (Click and look at v. 7). Where’s David hiding now? When the tooth of whatever you’re hiding is pulled, the relief is instantaneous. Why wait?

If that’s you or someone you know today, if you’ve ever had a tooth pulled or the pain of it relieved, you know, like David, that it’s better to come out from hiding and confess the uncomfortable things (v. 3-4).

Some Thoughts To Help You GO DEEPER with Today’s Message

Map David’s life and you’ll make stops at grief, loss, shame, betrayal, abandonment, rejection, family dysfunction, embarrassment, failure, atrocities, adultery, murder, a daughter raped by his son, the loss of several sons, loss of reputation, respect, position, security…and the normal stuff!

A person can carry pain a long time and a long way. But at some point, it all catches up… you have God’s word on this (Pro. 18:14, 28:13).

If you’re ready, you can do what David did, I did, others have done: Invite Jesus into the hiding place by simply acknowledging that “toothache” to God: What has happened to you or what you have done.

1) Write out the story. David did – a lot! In his Psalms, David confesses the good, bad, and ugly.

Write it out in a brief outline and ask God to reveal the details that caused you to hide. Let humility and honesty supply the ink. If it’s too much or too hard, get some trusted help.

2) Invite God into the event. Acknowledge your emotions, losses, and consequences. You’re not endorsing, excusing, confessing, or seeking anything – just inviting God in (Psa 42:11, 142).

These events are the ones you can’t, won’t, or keep talking about (that’s your clue). They trigger intense emotions when they visit unexpectedly. Give them to God in prayer (Psa. 62:8).

3) Rest! That’s enough for now. You’ve taken a giant step toward leaving the hiding place of pain behind and resting in Jesus (Psa. 37:1-7).

If it still hurts, go to the “dentist” without delay. Maybe it’s a trusted friend, pastor, counsellor… There’s no shame in getting help; you’ll feel better when you get it out.
