“We need to talk, now”! You probably don’t want to hear those words at work or when you get home. It’s usually not good and there’s no getting out of it.

But what happens when God calls the meeting?

Joshua is about to age out, and he says to those he led, “in my office, now! God has something to say to you.” You’ll find it in (Josh. 24:1-2).

Here’s what got me thinking. God reminds His people what He did for those who’ve gone before them (Josh. 24:2-13). God’s been good to them.

But in v. 8 and v. 13, God drives home the reason He called the meeting. “And I brought you…”. “And I have given you…” Okay, now it’s personal and it got my attention.

I wasn’t just good to them, I was good to you. And maybe even better: What a list! You didn’t do any of it, I did it. What’s on your list of what God’s done for you?

I’m pretty sure you know the last part of v. 15 by heart. It’s in almost every Believer’s home, isn’t it?

But I’m thinking maybe it’s v. 14 that should be hanging in every house.

I used to memorize verses from Joshua. Here’s a good one I forgot about (Josh. 22:5).

But what good are these verses if they just become wall ornaments or past memories?

It doesn’t take long to forget what God has done for you – and me. This age of distraction is not our friend if it causes us to forget what God has done.

Joshua called the meeting to say to God’s people, remember.

Remember life before you were rescued and redeemed.

Remember the bondage and wilderness that was your life without God.

Remember the day you bowed the knees and cried, “God be merciful to me a sinner!”

Remember the good things He’s given you that you didn’t deserve or earn.

Remember who bought you with a price (1 Cor. 6:19-20) and brought you to this promised place.

Joshua was on his way out and everyone knew the right answer to give in that God-called meeting (Josh. 24:16-18).

And just two chapters later, there’s a generation that knew not the Lord (Judg. 2:10).

Just two chapters! One generation and they forgot God! How does that happen?

Words on the wall.

Lip service to their God.

And their children paid the price.

It has me thinking maybe it’s time to call a meeting and remember what God has done and take those verses on the wall a little more seriously before it’s too late.

The next generation is counting on us and it’s got me thinking. How about you?

This is a hill worth dying on. Don’t shake it off.

Speaking of the next generation, this song really encouraged me: https://youtu.be/vpj4eWNhVTE?si=3UiwexfzSgpp6CD0 (not endorsement, just enjoyment)

FREE ONLINE BIBLE STUDY

Join us Mondays as we discuss one of the weekly posts. It’s a great time of fellowship and growth, but don’t take my word for it! 👇🏼

“I just wanted to reach out and say thank you. Monday’s Bible Study was truly impactful. Our discussion on the Great Commission, along with Aquila and Priscilla’s interaction with Apollos in Acts 18, was especially meaningful. We reflected on how they lovingly and respectfully corrected Apollos when he was teaching from an incomplete understanding of Jesus and the gospel.

After receiving that correction, Apollos moved forward boldly, spreading the gospel far and wide. This discussion encouraged me and helped strengthen my confidence in sharing the gospel with others. I also walked away with a valuable three-point framework for sharing my personal testimony.

Steve, I am deeply grateful for you and appreciate your obedience as a disciple in faithfully teaching and sharing the gospel.”

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:

One generation is all it takes to hear, “they knew not the Lord.” Think about your family or families you know. How many generations back does faith in Christ extend?

Now, how does it look for the generation to follow? Does their faith in and walk with Jesus look stronger or fading? Why. Write down some reasons you think this is true.

What about your faith and walk? Is it getting stronger or fading? Take a minute to talk to God about it. Do you want it to continue its present course or change. Why?

What might you be doing now that sounds like lip service or a plaque on the wall but is not encouraging the next generation by your good example. What needs to change?

Take a few minutes to remember the good things God has done for you. Name them and thank God for each one.

Let it become your motivation to make sure the next generation doesn’t forget.
