Enjoy today’s read!

My granddaughter loved to make a mess, then proclaim in that little “serious” voice, “It’s a mess!” Oh, how we laughed. Sometimes we look around and that’s all we can say, but it’s not funny.

I love this verse. It helps me so much when I can’t figure out what’s going on. I scan the Scriptures in my head and try to find a situation or person who dealt with what I’m facing. Try it.

In Gen. 12, Abram was facing a serious issue and his doubts about what God said caused him to waver and take a detour. Write it down. Your detour doesn’t deter God’s plan.

Outside of God’s expressed will, things can get rough and we’ll need some relief. So, Abram eventually returns to an altar he built earlier and talks to God again Gen. 13:1-4.

Remember, Rom. 15:4! God doesn’t always meet our return with singing and celebrations. He does something else Gen. 13:5-9. He gets things stirred up! What a mess and what’s going on?

Maybe there’s strife in your life right now. Things are stirred up and you’ve gone to God only to find it’s getting worse and God seems silent v. 10-13. The strife causes what seems like a mess.

Here’s where we go to school (v. 14). You need to look closely at the words. Did you see it? “After that Lot was separated from him,”. Years earlier Abram was told to separate from Lot (Gen. 12:1).

But Abram didn’t do it. He’s been travelling with Lot (kindred) for years. We’re not told why, but maybe he didn’t have the heart and needed some help from the Lord.

Yet as soon as he let go of what God told him to leave behind, Abram heard from God again and was renewed in His promises. God was just waiting.

So, what have you been carrying that God told you to leave behind?

Maybe it’s a relationship, habit, an attitude or possession that you know you’re hanging on to against God’s clear will. You’ve been carrying it for years and it’s keeping you from God.

Look around for where you’re noticing strife, aggravation, interpersonal conflicts and things that have taken a sudden turn and aren’t working the way they used to. You know, “it’s a mess!”

Maybe like Abram, you’re getting a little “help” from God working behind the scenes.

Let it go.

If God said it’s not for you, then until you let it go, you may be delaying some promises. God’s silence just might be Him waiting at the altar you built awhile back.

His plan isn’t deterred; you just got detoured… and maybe even a little disobedient?

You won’t hear from Him until you let go of that thing you’ve been carrying against His will for far too long. He’s waiting. Why not let it go?

You’ll find more about this in the GO DEEPER section below.

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:

Here’s an outline that might offer additional insights into how God works behind the scenes when we’ve delayed our obedience and God is going to “help” us get back on track:

1. Make A Departure from Your Detour (Gen. 13:1-4)

In the school of faith, we make choices we later regret or realize weren’t God’s will. So, what do we do? Remember, no failure is final is the school of faith.

Return to where you remember being in God’s will. Ask, what did His word say and where did I take a detour? Think about where you might have trusted you more than His word.

2. See God in The Difficulties (Gen. 13:5-9)

Relational strife, difficulties or loss of peace that won’t go away point to the possibility that God’s faithfulness is at work. You can lay aside your rights and trust God with the outcome.

God’s initiative in our indecisiveness brings change we don’t have the courage, understand-ing or ability to accomplish on our own. Ask, how might God be working in this situation?

3. Make a Righteous Decision (Gen. 13:10-13)

When things aren’t working, the decision regarding the next step can make the difference between delight and disaster. (Pro. 18:1-2). From what might it be time to wisely separate? Seems like Lot might have been living in v. 2. Are you?

Our decisions must be guided by godliness not what looks good. When we pitch our tents toward Sodom, like Lot, we’ll soon be sorry (2 Pet 2:7-8).

God knew and separated Lot from Abram before things got much worse. How might He be attempting to do the same in your life? Talk to Him about it.

4. Make Doubtlessness Your Guide (Gen. 13:14-18)

It takes a while to grow in faith. But chose to believe God’s promises, and with practice, take steps toward each of His promises. Pray, Lord Jesus, help thou my unbelief!

Life can cause us to doubt, get distracted, or get our eyes off God promises. When that happens, God is not disappointed in us, He is schooling us and waiting for us.

Make the decision to separate from what is clearly not His will, recognize He’s at work in your difficulties, and depart to the place where you remember being in His will. He’ll be waiting for you there!
