Forty years of hustle can take a toll. But it did teach me something: I’m tired! And lately, something’s changed. My pace has slowed.
These words of Jesus have also taken on new meaning. I hope you adopt them earlier than me.
Can you think of a time Jesus was hurried, hustling, or restless? He wasn’t, intentionally.
That can be you too. We choose to live frantic lives, but we can also choose not to. Look again at Mt. 11:28-30.
Christ invites you to take His yoke. Jesus was a carpenter’s son. He knew how to make yokes.
Each one was customized for the intended wearer and work they were called to do. He’ll do that for you too. He invites you to let Him shape the life He intended for you (Mt. 6:33-34).
When you invite Him to make a yoke for you, what might He say about your priorities, pace and pursuits? How would He fashion that yoke so you could live the life He expects?
Life can be wearisome and the bills pile up. I get that. But our lifestyle and cost of living don’t have to mirror the world around us. We can choose to not live the “rat race”, right?
Yokes are made for pulling. Jesus knows that. But the kind and quality of work you choose to pull might be robbing you and those around you of the better life He intended for you.
You see, Jesus also says, learn of me. As you follow Jesus, you can also choose to live more like He lived and less like those around you. You can make adjustments.
A few more “noes” to commitments others want you to make. A lighter schedule, less social media and other time thieves… being relational instead of “productive”.
Following Jesus, we learn that relationships – with God and others – are more important. Believing that calls us to be more intentional, measured, and humble.
It’s the new year and I’m not suggesting another “resolution”. But it might be good to reevaluate your definition of “rest” and whose expectations control your life.
This isn’t a call to laziness. Work is good. But you can waste your life working to retire.
If we work our fingers to the bone during our best and healthiest years only to retire late in life, in poor health and with strained relationships, was it a good trade?
God offers rest when you’re yoked to Him. He doesn’t drive us harder; He unloads the burdens of “busyness” and gives us permission to live unhurried and without the hustle.
The life Jesus calls you to yoke to probably won’t look like the one you’re living. And it’s yours to put on whenever you’re ready for a life that is both restful and useful (v. 29-30).

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:
Let’s drill down a little deeper into Mt. 11:28-30. Make some time to think about these questions and write down your answers:
1) What is Christ offering in this passage?
2) What part does Jesus play and what’s your responsibility? What role does being busy and burdened play?
3) What attempts at “rest” have you found unsatisfying or inadequate? Why?
4) How has society or your “circle” contributed to your expectations about work and rest?
5) In v. 29, we’re called to “learn of Him”. Why is this a necessary part of taking His yoke?
6) Where do you feel the strain or exhaustion of the hurried life or the hustle? What might Christ be fashioning for you and your life if you decide to take His yoke upon you?
7) Jesus calls us to “come unto Him”. How might your priorities, pursuits, and pace keep you from coming to Him and taking His yoke?
8) Someone said, discomfort is the door that keeps us from real change. What discomfort do you have to push through to knock and that door and invite Jesus to yoke with you?
