When we pulled into the parking lot, a crowd had gathered to watch through her window. It was 90 degrees, sun blazing, all her windows up and the heat on. Yes, heat!
They were afraid and doing nothing, except making comments, yet she left some clues on the seat unable to respond. Somebody needed to do something, but nobody would.
So, we did. A broken window, some glucose, and a life saved from a diabetic emergency.
In Exo. 14, God looked at His people and basically says, don’t look at me, you do something! Here it is. You’ve been there; I’ve been there.
Maybe you feel trapped, paralyzed, helpless or just uncertain. Inactivity takes over with the complaints, legitimate excuses, and fear that immobilizes you.
You know you need to do something, but see no way forward. So, you cry to God.
Don’t be all that surprised if the Lord responds with, “why are you crying to me. Go!” (Exo. 14:15-16). There are situations that are legitimately “terrifying”, like this (v. 9).
In those moments the Lord might shock you with the unexpected.
He expects you to step into the unknown, the impossible, the dilemma, fear and uncertainty. He’s brought you this far and now it’s time for you to do something.
Stop staring at the problem, stop praying over it, crying about it. I’m with you. Go forward..
When studying, I like to sit in the place of each character in the text. Think hard. What options appeared to these people trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army?
Look how Moses tries to encourage them (v. 10-14). That’s what most of us would do. Go to God! Wait on the Lord! Pray about it. But deep down maybe even Moses doubted.
God, are you there? I know what you said, now please do something. I’m desperate and nobody’s helping. I don’t see a way out or forward.
And God responds with the unexpected (v. 15-16). But then we must act on His word.
Now, I don’t sit where you sit. I’m not here to tell you what to do. But maybe it’s time to stop doing what everyone else is doing - complaining, fearing, staring, waiting for somebody (else) to do something.
Here’s what just might await your next decisive act (Ex. 14:15-22).
Maybe you feel like that woman with the diabetic emergency with the heat on or like those outside immobilized by ignorance, or like the people in Moses’ day, trapped.
Be encouraged. God has the resources you need in place when you step into the problem. And He’s right there before and behind you when you decide to “go forward”.
You’ll find more on this and some helpful questions in the GO DEEPER section below. If you’d like to learn to study your Bible better, sign up for the waitlist for our next online cohort.

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:
Think of some situations, maybe from the past or one you’re in now, where you felt trapped, paralyzed, helpless, hopeless or just uncertain and immobilized.
You know, those times you needed to do something, but saw no way forward.
Instead of more crying out to God, what promises or directions from His word has He already made that await your proactive response?
v. 19-30. Read over these verses. What were some of the results of the new course of action? Now list all the possible results when you take some new action.
It’s good and right to talk to the Lord when we have problems. Moses certainly did. But then Moses heard from God in a discernable way.
What are ways you have experienced knowing that God has spoken to you?
- For some, it’s appropriate Scriptures come to mind just as Jesus promised (John 16:13). The more Bible you read and learn the more will be available to recall.
- You might see circumstances change, resources show up, or a new opportunity present itself. It seems like a door has opened to move forward (Acts 16:6-10).
- You might experience peace or assurance over a decision or direction (v. 10)
The Lord told Moses, "Tell the Israelites to go forward". How might the Lord be saying to you that it’s time to act, to move forward? What are the appropriate next steps?
For further study of situations where reluctant people were told by God to go: 2 Chr. 20:1-30, Acts 9:1-19, 10:1-23. When you’re done, Let me know what you find!
