Enjoy today’s read!

Both worked, had a place to keep up, bills to pay, things to do and very little by way of modern conveniences to make their day easier. Yet, to read about them in the Bible is to be inspired by what they also managed.

Have you ever been conversing with someone at work, a neighbor, or even someone from your church that professed a belief or said something in a way that just doesn’t sit right. Now what?

There are many who profess certain biblical beliefs and are beneficiaries of the great commission. At least half of the great commission that is.

But what about the great omission?

The other part of the two-part mission to which all believers are called but few answer. Discipleship.

It’s the development part. Where mature believers invest in young believers – the give and take of growing in grace and knowledge of Jesus. It doesn’t just happen by listening to a sermon or social media posts.

Jesus, with all authority said “go” and as you go, preach and teach. We get the preach the gospel part right, even the baptize them part, but what about the “and teach them” part?

Your beliefs and mine need to be vetted, developed, challenged, matured. How does that look in your busy life? The Bible is a big book and those who profess the faith, but don’t quite understand it, need help.

When we dismiss being mentored by more mature believers and offering mentoring to less mature brothers and sisters in Christ, we risk being saved but stunted, delivered but undeveloped.

Like this guy. He knew a lot of Bible but something was off and it wasn’t sitting right with this busy couple.

Instead of ignoring it they invested in a man who became invaluable in the ministry. Simple right? Yes! If you’ll be intentional about God’s business and not so invested in your own.

It might be as simple as saying to that one who has a lot to say about the faith but not quite accurately, let’s have lunch. Then do what Aquila and Priscilla did right here

Discipleship. It’s not complicated but it is a much neglected and much needed part of the great commission.

When believers invest in believers, the body of Christ grows deeper, stronger, and more influential.

It’s as simple as asking someone with a more developed faith in Christ to teach you and finding someone with a less developed faith and offering to teach them the ways of God more perfectly.

Since Christ commands it maybe we shouldn’t be so busy that we dismiss it.

Some of my closest friends and fondest memories have been formed by breaking bread with other believers and opening the Bible together in a group or personal discipleship. It’s how believers grow.

Where can you start? I’ll do my part, but you’ll have to make time to do yours.

You can take this two-minute read and study it with the go deeper section below, share it, and meet with others to discuss it over coffee. You can also join the free Monday online study where we do this together.

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:

The apostle Paul promoted discipleship by choosing to be a good example of the faith and teaching others how to mature in the faith. Wherever he went he sought opportunities to make and meet disciples.

In Acts 18:1-3, God draws our attention to a couple who chose to sacrifice some time to invest in God’s Great Commission. Believers everywhere are to declare, demonstrate and develop others in God’s word.

Below, I’m offering just a few simple steps each of us can take toward more meaningful ministry as we go about our busy lives. Aquila and Priscilla are an amazing and unassuming couple we can all learn from.

1) Seek Habitually. Be an investor in others by constantly interacting with those in your everyday life. Ask, how can I invest in the spiritual growth and biblical understanding of _____? Or seek it from them.

2) Show Hospitality. Be Inviting. Build relationships by refreshing others. How can you use your home to bless, encourage or introduce to others to the family of God? Open your home.

3) Stay Hungry. Refuse to be Intimidated. Like Aquila and Priscilla, stay on mission no matter what, no matter where, and no matter who. Your resilience will be rewarded with results!

4) Serve Humbly. Be Involved. Decide your home and life will be characterized by commitment not convenience. Be the servant that others can count on.

Aquila and Priscilla are worth your effort to study. God introduced them to Paul (and us) in Acts 18. But their availability and flexibility also earn something we should all covet – a shoutout from God (2 Tim. 4:19)!

If you’re ready to take up the second part of the great commission, I’m ready to help.
