This Wasn’t Handled Well

If I had to start over, I’d do it differently.

Enjoy today’s read!

You’ve seen it many times - someone of great stature, station, or success fails and bad things follow. Or we get a “fresh start” and blow it almost immediately. Like this guy.

He’s righteous, committed to God, full of faith - and after his amazing feat, he fails.

Yet God doesn’t allow failure to define him, or you. You’ll search in vain to find a bad thing said about him. Here’s the back story.

Like you and me, Noah met his limits when he let down his guard.

v.18-19. Be alert when you feel like you’ve just stepped out of a tough situation and have a fresh start. Your new-found freedom can quickly lead to failure.

Yeah, but Noah? Yup.

v. 20. You can choose to do anything with your life. Noah chose farming. But stress can lead you into small indulgences that eventually lead to great indignities.

He didn’t handle this well and here’s where things get ugly.

v. 21-29. You can almost hear him say, what’s wrong with some wine after the work?

Good people fail because they attempt things and might not be up for the task. That’s okay, it’s normal. At other times they let success go to their head or indulge unwisely.

The stresses and pressures of life you face or unwise permissions you give yourself can cause you to make bad choices. Be careful how you reward yourself; you might live to regret it.

When you work hard, get stressed, or find success, a garden looks pretty good, and so does the grape!

Moderation helps maintain morality. Here’s a go-to verse to memorize (Rom. 13:14)

When you fail, you learn about yourself. You learn your limits, what you lack, about loved ones and their reactions. And you learn lessons – sometimes hard ones.

Failure can also reveal your faults: morally like David, materially like that rich young ruler, and how you handle the monotony of life like Solomon who got bored.

But also, with your mouth. Noah cursed his grandson and God honored those words! Why him, he didn’t do it. That’s what anger can do.

I’m reminded how serious we should take Pro. 18:21. Think long and hard before you say it in anger or frustration; you might not get those words back.

Noah didn’t own Ham’s actions, but he did own his own reactions. When irresponsible choices lead to failure, responsible choices help us get back on our feet (Psa. 51:10-17).

I have no doubt that if we could talk to Noah he’d say, “If I had to start over, I’d do it differently.” And sometimes we even get another chance.

Failure reveals our faults, it also reveals the true nature of the gospel: Forgiveness for failures and freedom to recover what sin ruined with a hopeful future. Jesus does that!

Failure doesn’t define you, what you do with failure defines you. So, if you’ve let down your guard, you can trust God’s grace to help you recover.

And He won’t say a bad thing about you either (1 John 1:9)!

When my walk with God has grown distant, the four things I put in the GO DEEPER section below have helped me recover every time.

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:

When My Walk with Jesus Feels Distant, Here’s What I Do That Works Every Time

Your walk with Jesus can get off track. When it does, these four things will bring you back and they’re easier than you think:

1) Get Refreshed by The Water of The Word (Eph. 5:26).

You’ll feel better when you wash in the clean water of God’s word.

When things feel off in my walk, I immediately give God time to speak. He gently lets me know what’s wrong and how to get back on track.

2) Get Refocused by Being Honest with God (1 John 1:9).

Add a little soap of confession and talk to God about what He’s showing you.

You probably already know where things started getting of track. Go there with God in prayer and be honest with Him. He already knows! Transparency is the path to getting back on track with Jesus.

3) Get Reinvigorated by A Step of Obedience (Psa. 119:59-60).

You’ll feel stronger when you yield to God’s power in your life.

When you take simple steps of obedience to God’s will you’ll be well on your way back toward God. He’ll empower every step and put light on your path back. Trust Him.

4) Get Refocused with Some Good Reminders (Num. 15:38-39).

Put some reminders in your life, on your mirror, your dashboard… just a verse that applies to your weakness or points you toward Jesus instead of the old stuff.

Speaking of reminders: Forward this email to your friends so they too can get biblical guidance and encouragement from these free bi-weekly reads.

When you do, they’ll also get access to a free Bible Guide and 15-Day Challenge.

You can have them too if you haven’t already received them here and here! Enjoy.
