The situation they faced was like a child dumping a box of broken pieces on the table with big tears and saying, can you fix it? Life can get that way, can’t it?
Things get so broken that it seems like nothing can fix it.
Relationships can be restored, and so can finances, health or a life out of control.
And that broken heart or shattered dream? It too can be restored.
Even when your sense of security and well-being are threatened, it can be restored.
This is worth remembering: God can restore what sin has ruined.
But it’s when you start rebuilding what sin has ruined that things can get rough. People say unhelpful stuff, make suggestions that aggravate the situation, or try to stop you!
Neh. 4:1-9 offers some insight.
No matter how big the mess, a cry for help and some hard work goes a long way.
Nehemiah faced a city with walls broken down, people who were struggling, a project worth the effort and significant obstacles to making progress.
What are you facing?
Whatever you find worth [re]building, here’s a small piece of advice from a guy who did it:
Pray, Pursue, Persist, then Pray Some More! That’s not trite. Take it seriously.
v. 1-6. When your desire to rebuild is a worthwhile endeavor expect both the devil and God to engage. The enemy seeks to shut you down while God keeps you dependent upon Him.
You’ve probably heard that critics are a dime a dozen. So are pessimists and difficult people. Avoid them. Just give them to God in prayer and engage in your pursuit (v. 4-5).
Did you see what Nehemiah did? I love this guy!
He ignored the hard people, made them God’s problem, and appealed to a higher motivation to keep momentum.
It’s not always easy, but it is necessary if you’re going to make progress.
And then there are those problems that inevitably arise. You know, the obstacles, unanticipated situations and what or whoever is trying to thwart your momentum.
Expect them and stay engaged. While you’re at it, pray, pursue, persist, and pray some more. I know I already said that, but in the heat of things we need to hear it again.
Fixing broken things isn’t easy. Some things even look broken beyond repair. And this is where you get to decide how big and capable your God is.
Here’s real hope. It may be hard, it will be work, but it can also be repaired much sooner than anyone expected (6:15). Those involved just need a mind and heart to work at it.
Sometimes we need the heart to more than the how to. I sure hope you got that today. It starts with the heart.
A builder friend of mind likes to take on the tough projects. His secret is “patience and pressure”. That’s how things that are hard and seem impossible get done.
And if I might add, pray, pursue, persist, and pray some more.
There were some things Nehemiah did to fix that box of broken pieces and some questions to further this study in the GO DEEPER section below.

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:
If you’ve ever seen bad news coming or just received it, the first thing you instinctively do is take a deep breath.
But what’s the next thing you instinctively do? For some, it’s worry, anxiety, avoidance, or bargaining… What is it you do when things look broken or you get the bad news?
Write it down. Write out where things look broken or bad right now and notice your emotions and reactions as you write.
Nehemiah heard really bad news and things looked broken beyond repair (Neh. 1:1-3).
Now look at what he did instinctively (v. 4-6). How does that line up with your response?
Here’s four things he did that you could do whenever it looks broken beyond repair:
1. He Sat Down. It’s a good way to absorb, process and get acclimated to a new reality.
2. He Wept and Mourned for Days. He doesn’t like or want this new reality. But he needs time to work through normal powerful emotions before he takes the next step.
3. Fasted. Self-denial and change of routine highlight your need before God.
4. Prayed. If you read the rest of the book, what sin ruined God restored. Nehemiah accepted what happened BUT also took some initiative once he got clarity.
He prayed, pursued God and His revealed will, persisted when it was tough, and then prayed some more. You can too. Talk to God about it right now.
And sooner than he imagined the thing that was broken was rebuilt.
What step(s) have you ignored in the list above? Go back and do them. Get help if you need it in processing events that have occurred.
What steps can you take in prayer, pursuit, persisting and praying some more that would be within the will of God even if it looks impossible now? How big is your God?
