Enjoy today’s read!

They were young, excited, beautiful. Weddings are the pastor’s favorite event. There’s life, energy, excitement and potential. A dream has been birthed and it’s a blessed day!

No one would have expected that less than two years later I’d be doing his funeral.

Who would?

As challenging as his loss was, something he did made it easier.

At funerals, I give space for anyone to share some words. It’s medicinal. It’s instructive. It’s quite revealing. People don’t always have “nice things” to say, most say nothing.

But when people had the chance to share about this young man, they didn’t have to think of “something nice” or wrestle over how they were treated by him.

He made a good name for himself and how he lived wrote his “eulogy” (2 Cor. 3:3).

Did you know God has something to say about funerals?

It’s raw.

It’s reality.

You can’t run.

It’s revealed in Eccl. 7:1-4.

God appoints the funeral, yours and mine, for good reasons:

To stop you,

Sit you down,

Sober you up,

Confront you,

And force you to consider your life and take some things to heart. What will they say?

Thankfully we’re not having your funeral today, yet an appointment is set (Heb. 9:27)!

And before you get there God can use a post like this to offer another chance to heed the call to repentance and bury whatever is getting in the way of a good name.

  • It might be some bitterness or unforgiveness, envy or anger needs to be put to rest.

  • It’s time to let the pride die so you can get that thing right or let it go.

  • Your identity got wrapped up in work, image, wealth… and it’s time to bury the idol. (I wrote about things that must get buried to move on in this email and here on IG).

  • Admit you didn’t fulfill your role the way you should or could have and confess it.

  • Make the call and get the help you need with that life-controlling issue.

When you decide that a good name is better (v. 1), you can (re)write your eulogy by how you live going forward so those who matter have good things to say.

So, what will they say? What do you want them to say? You get to choose.

Grab a pen and paper and write what you know others will say if they’re honest. Then write what you’d like them to say. Ask God to help you make a good name for yourself.

A blessed new dream can be birthed today and who knows what God can do with the eulogy you write with your life by the Spirit of God when you lay it to heart.

There’s more help with this in the GO DEEPER section below. And, as always, you can reach out to me here and share your thoughts or get some guidance. I read every email.

GO DEEPER & Get More Out of Today’s Read:

None of us really like to think about funerals. But if you’ll take some time to consider yours before that appointment arrives, you and those you love will be glad you did.

God loves giving second chances and restoring lives that sinful or self-centered living ruins.

If this post is a wakeup call, take advantage of the opportunity. Ask God for help in identifying and making changes you feel are necessary.

Writing it out helps:

What would they say if my funeral was tomorrow and they had to speak the truth about how I lived, treated them, and what I valued (was known for)?

What would I like them to say? What are the steps I need to take to make it possible?

If God made you stop, sit, sober up and listen because He wanted to confront some things in your life before your appointment with the funeral arrives, what would they be?

What would He want you to take to heart?

Thankfully they’re not having your funeral today! Make this the day you take it to heart and make your new or amended start. A good name is better, and God is ready to help.

If you’re not sure you’re ready to meet with God now or at your funeral, reach out to me or someone who has a good spiritual walk with Jesus and ask for some help.
