You’re probably going to have thoughts about this but give it an honest hearing. It’s a hard truth from God’s word – and hard to avoid.
You spend a lot of time at work, building a career, and instead of bringing you pleasure it brings you misery.
The boss is difficult or demanding and there’s nothing you can do.
Now it feels like God might be calling you to search elsewhere. But feelings are a poor guide, especially when you’re suffering. We need clarity and God’s word gives it.
Your misery at work might be God’s call to minister not move; to reveal Christ, not relocate 1 Pet. 2:17-21. Read the words carefully a couple of times.
You might have missed it so look again at v. 21. Is God serious? Stay and suffer?
In our day and age – comfort is king. But Christ’s calling is not for our comfort, it’s for our character and for His kingdom. And how we conduct ourselves at work is huge!
Living like we’ve been to Calvary is challenging but it’s how others see the gospel at work.
Believers are called to hard things. To slow down and consider God’s calling before we consider what’s comfortable or convenient – what works for God instead of for us.
Because… How believers behave at work can even become blasphemous.
Seriously? Yup. It’s right here (1 Tim. 6:1-2).
I know, you have thoughts about this one. Pray about it. It’s too important not to.
Hardships in the workplace have the potential to reveal your humanity AND your Christianity! You get to choose which one goes on display.
1 Peter is all about how the believer suffers for the cause amid a culture set against Christ. He calls us to a lively hope that points to Christ while we suffer, not after we’ve escaped.
Memorize Psa. 69:30. You need it because your misery is your opportunity to magnify God – at work.
That boss or co-worker giving you a hard time, that makes you want to skip work today or look for a new job… they just might be the reason God gave you that job!
I know. You have thoughts about this one. But now you also have God’s.
Work is a big deal, and you spend a good part of life there. I get that. So does God.
It’s also your mission field. Not just when it’s going well (v. 18), but especially when it isn’t (v. 19-20)! Jesus set the standard (v. 21). Ask Him to empower you to follow in His steps.
Now, about those thoughts. Reply here and send them to me. I read them all.
You’ll find more to think about down in the GO DEEPER section. Hope it helps.

“Praise Jesus for people like Steve who are willing to step out and help people like me understand and be able to study the Bible the right way with no misconceptions, no pressure. I for one never knew how to ask for help in this area, but the Lord knew and sent Steve with the Monday MUZE. We would love to have you join us! If you’re like me, it's the best place to be if you want to learn and are too afraid/embarrassed to ask!
Most grateful!”

GO DEEPER & Get More Out of Today’s Read:
Titus 2:6-14 and 1 Pet. 2:17-21 are good reference points along with what follows in this section to help you better understand and apply today’s read.
If you’re not being forced to sin or be unethical, your suffering at work might be God’s school for the development of your disposition and demonstration of the gospel.
Christian character requires self-denial and discipline. Suffering at work is one way God teaches you biblical (not cultural) submission.
Patiently enduring provocations without succumbing to temptation to sin, sulk, strike out or become self-absorbed points to God’s grace. It’s unusual, that’s why it’s so effective.
1 Tim. 6:1-2 is hard to ignore. Your behavior at work has the potential to become blasphemous! Let faith in what God says (not your feelings) guide your work ethic and conduct (Eph. 6:5-9).
Because work is such a significant part of your life, think of it as your stewardship of God’s calling more than your means to earn a living.
It’s helpful to think of the difficulties you face at work as opportunities to put Christ and the gospel on display instead of obstacles to your personal happiness.
