Enjoy today’s read!

Raising our children on our small hobby farm introduced them to nature in many ways – some were harsh, others simply hilarious! And then there was our dog.

After helping himself to some rotten tuna that got left in the hot sun for days, he gulped down all the eggs from the chicken coop that was left open.

But then it got worse.

He thought the chicken manure was too good to resist. Dog’s will be dogs.

Later as he sat by my son’s feet it all came back out the same way it went in! You know what he did next, right?

It reminds me of 2 Pet. 2:18-22. People we love can act just like dogs. But it’s not funny.

Some temptation or provocation encourages a return to old habits or ways of dealing with things and it isn’t a pretty sight. Walking after the old nature instead of the new never is.

For some it’s even worse. Life-controlling habits and attitudes rule their lives. They’re addicted and like a dog chained to a tree that cannot get free.

It’s that involuntary burst of emotion, hurtful words, endless thoughts of victimhood or returning to your favorite cope. The old nature seems to rule your beliefs and behaviors.

Alright, can an old dog be taught new tricks?

God thinks so. I love what Romans 6:16-23 says. In Christ you have a new Master who calls the shots and supplies all that you need without having to beg.

And Jesus said you can be freed to follow your new Master’s voice John 8:34-36. No more returning to your vomit, free from the chain that holds you in bondage.

Cut a dog loose that’s chained to a tree and it will run away. Call its old name all you want but it isn’t listening. It goes by a new name called “freedom” and won’t be coming back!

The word we use for life-controlling beliefs and behaviors is “addiction”. Yet the only time the Bible uses the word is right here and it’s in a positive sense. Addiction is good?

Repetitive actions form habits that create routines than become lifestyles for good or bad.

If you want the dog to change, teach it repetitively, consistently, throw in a few healthy rewards with encouragement and soon enough new habits are formed and old ones fade.

Give yourself permission to think, feel, say, and do things in a more God-honoring way then repeat them until it becomes a habit, routine, then life-controlling.

You have a new name in Christ called freedom. He’s your Master now and when you taste and see that He is good, you won’t come back to that chain or tree.

You won’t miss the taste of vomit either.

The 15-Minute Retirement Plan

GO DEEPER & Get More Out of Today’s Read:

Pray and invite God into helping you with the following questions and ideas.

What repetitive, even involuntary, thoughts, feelings, words or deeds control you more than you like or like to admit?

Take a few minutes and list them.

Next to each one write the reason you believe you give space to them in your life.

If Jesus were sitting with you, what would He gently say about each one? See if you can find Scripture that speaks directly to each of them.

Pick one issue that is habitual or life-controlling and give yourself no more access to it or permission to act upon it.

Simultaneously begin doing what God’s word says instead repetitively, consistently and intentionally until a new habit and routine is formed.

Starve (fast from) what is undesirable until the desire dies and feed the new habit or trait instead.

You might have to put away, throw away, give away, destroy or make no provision for those old things. Do whatever it takes.

Remember to stay encouraged as you form new habits with God’s help and reward yourself along the way to stay motivated.

Who can you invite into the process to keep you motivated and accountable? Do it.

Find scriptures that encourage the new beliefs and behaviors, keep them with you, and refer to them often while you create the habit of putting off the old and putting on the new.

There’s no going back so keep your eyes on Jesus, He’s with you every step.
