Enjoy today’s read!

Could we have a little fun today – at our own expense? I wrote an IG post yesterday that got quite a bit of traction. It resonates because we’re all guilty. (You can see it here).

It’s sounds funny, but it’s really not.

There are four “exercise mistakes” Christians make that are dangerous (I’m picking on us, because we know everybody does this). See how many you make (or made today 🥴).

Hopefully, you can own them, laugh at yourself a little, and then fix your exercise routine so no one else gets hurt, including you. These ruin relational health and reputations:

One. “Jumping to conclusions” (Pr. 18:13). You finish the sentence before they can; assume before you have all the information; or you tend to worry and ruminate – a lot!

Two. “Running at the mouth” (Eccl. 5:2). You say unhelpful things, ramble on, gossip, repeat unverified things you heard, and break confidences. You tell the stories that aren’t yours to tell. I wrote about “talking too much” here.

Three. “Stretching the truth” (Pr. 12:17). Believers are to be truth-tellers. You don’t have to say anything, but if you do, it should be accurate – no exaggeration or understatement. Both are “false witness”.

This probably never happens, but if you’re going to ask “how do I look in this?”, you might think twice. And if you’re asked, you don’t have to answer, but if you do…

Four. You “walk the line with sin” (Rom 13:14). Maybe you’re dabbling, or, like Lot in Gen. 13, you’re “pitching your tent toward Sodom”. You’re getting comfortable with the wrong company. You’re looking, lingering or dwelling on it a little too long. I like this advice.

If we’re going to get in better shape as believers, we’re going to need to work at these fundamental steps in our walk with God. We can’t ignore the obvious and expect real gain.

Here’s something we can all agree on: It’s easy to see these mistakes in others. But we need to identify them in our own lives first.

And speaking of gain, no pain no gain. Whatever it takes to correct these four mistakes will be paying you back for a lifetime in relational health and reputation.

Take a few minutes right now and talk to God about it. Ask Him to show you where you’re in danger of getting hurt or hurting others with these common but not so funny mistakes.

Who knows, maybe a new routine will produce new results. You probably know this verse, but it does you no good until you make it part of your daily routine.

I’m sure there are other ways we get our “exercise” the wrong way. Reply here if you think of any and I might pick one or two and give a shout out in the next edition.

Here’s another mistake Believer’s make. They trip over how to read or study their Bible to align their beliefs with Scripture. This live online cohort will help you, no doubt!

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:

The four mistakes mentioned in the two-minute read should really not be named among followers of Jesus.

So we exercise (put forth effort) until we gain the spiritual and relational muscle to overcome our faults (1 Tim. 4:7-8).

We can’t afford to be lazy and brush this off. It’s not a matter of “this is just how I am”. It’s a matter of who you are choosing to be.

Spend some time with God in humility and sincerity and let Him reveal where you might need work.

It doesn’t feel good when our faults are pointed out, but it’s better than when they’re not (James 1:23-25). If you had food on your chin, you’d want someone to tell you, right?

It’s important to identify them in your life (it’s easier to see them in others, right?). Then write them down, own them, take responsibility and confess them to God.

In doing so you can begin and commit to real progress.

Take a few minutes right now and talk to God about it (Jer 10:23-24, Psa. 139:24-25).

Ask Him to show you where you’re in danger of getting hurt or hurting others with these common but not so funny mistakes.

You can also ask a close friend who you trust to be honest with you (Psa 141:5)

This can be painful and uncomfortable – just like exercising untrained muscle. But soon you and those around you will be reaping the benefits of your effort. Ask God to help you.
