If you were in the room with me yesterday, no emoji could capture the look on my face! I’ve read and taught the Bible for 30+ years – and never saw this until yesterday 🥴.
What bothers me is that I do what they did more than I’m willing to admit and you do too.
Here’s what I’ve not seen before (Exo. 24:9-11). Honestly, I don’t know how I missed this.
We who believe have had some kind of encounter with the living God. I’m not talking physical appearances or a burning mountain top. But He sure got our attention, right?
Do you remember Peter sticking his foot in His mouth, denying the Lord’s self-revelation about His resurrection, and even denying the Lord out loud three times?
And he did that after seeing the Lord transfigured in all His glory. Peter, how could you do that?
Let’s get back to Exo. 24:9-11. Read it again.
All those leaders (73) went up into the mount with Moses and ”THEY” SAW the LORD! What? It wasn’t just Moses – they all experienced God – profoundly!
But a few chapters later (Exo. 32:1-6) they’re carrying on like God doesn’t exist while the mountain is still burning and God is working on their behalf!
Who does this?
Well, you and I do. We gain some great insight from our reading, study, or a message we HEAR and know it’s from God.
We even agreed with it (Exo. 24:7).
We see Him do some great work in our life or someone we know.
He answers a prayer so directly we can see that it’s Him doing it.
We have an undeniable encounter with God.
Then a couple chapters of our life later we’re carrying on like He doesn’t really matter. We sense He’s nearby, but it doesn’t have much effect.
Here’s my point. How often have you heard from the word of God, even got it in writing, signed, sealed, and delivered, and then did your own thing anyway? Yeah, me too 🫢.
Maybe you haven’t made a golden calf your Captain, but you might be doing some of that other stuff that thrills your flesh but not your Lord.
Moses was so upset he broke the tables God just gave him (Exo. 32:15-20). Aaron was full of excuses (v. 21-24). But let’s face it, no emoji could capture the look on his face.
Back to Peter for a moment. He said the written word is better than what he experienced at the transfiguration (2 Pet. 1:17-21).
So, what have you seen and heard from God’s word but allowed other things to get you carried away? Now might be a good time to give them to the Lord before He steps in.
I wrote this about The Step You’ll Wish You Didn’t Take. It’s about building an altar of disobedience you’ll soon regret. Let me know your thoughts.
The extra stuff you’ll find in the GO DEEPER section below might help you. Check it out.

GO DEEPER with Today’s Read:
What are some things you might be holding on to from the “old life” before you came to Christ that needs to go? Ask the Holy Spirit to help reveal them and write them down.
Then take them before the Lord and confess them. Give them one by one to the Lord in repentance and faith and make arrangements to keep them out of your life (Rom. 13:14).
In Exo. 20, Moses was given the 10 Commandments verbally. In Exo. 24:3-8, Moses instructed the people from the word of God and sanctified it with blood! Wow!!
We all get some things from God that are “signed, sealed, and delivered”.
But soon after, God’s people were not in the word like they should be and went back to some things they learned in Egypt (the world they were rescued out of).
Take some time to consider what you know to be true from God’s word and where you’ve allowed that to slip – it might be time in the word, prayer, service or attendance… idols, attitudes, priorities.
Again, ask the Holy Spirit to help you and then give it to God in repentance and faith so you can move forward free and clear with a conscience void of offense.
I wrote some things about the conscience last week. You can read it here.
