When Lorie and I decided it was time to move from the hobby farm our family bootstrapped for 20 years, it became painfully obvious how much stuff we accumulated.
Our yard was clean, the barns were organized, the house was lean and clean. But we still had so much to sort, sell, and stuff into the one car garage at our new place.
Now, every time I need something in the garage, stuff’s in the way. That’s life, right?
If you want to get to the good stuff, you can’t ignore the other stuff that gets in the way.
I was reading 1 Samuel 15, a familiar and powerful interaction between king Saul and Samuel. But v. 9 jumped out like never before. It’s those words in the middle.
“…and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them…”. Then v. 10-11. Oh man.
You know what God says, it’s clear, but let the stuff you deem “good” get in the way. Then the consequences follow: God’s best for you is no longer an option for you.
That got me thinking about how what we deem “pleasant stuff” can get in the way of what should be our most important stuff: family relationships. Like 1 Kgs 20. It’s maddening.
Prioritizing the stuff that pleases you can ruin your relationships and reputation. It no longer matters what it does to your family, as long as you can keep what pleases you.
But then this guy from Mark 10:17-22 is terrifying. I think it’s common. How about you?
Someone who seems to have it together, can check all the religious boxes (almost), runs after and bows to Jesus lets his stuff get in the way of genuine salvation.
What did Jesus do? Terrifying!
No argument, no compromise or plea to get him to believe... Jesus just let him walk away – lost. He thought he was good enough and knew Jesus enough. But stuff got in the way.
What stuff is keeping you from walking with Jesus and following Him closely? Maybe it’s material, emotional, mental, relational, financial or spiritual. Ask God, He’ll show you.
You might find it helpful to consider the consequences you’re likely to face if you allow this stuff to continue. What will you forfeit, who will it affect, and is it keeping you from Christ?
Before you face the unavoidable consequences of forfeiting God’s best for you, or hurting relationships that matter, and Christ Himself, clear out some of the stuff getting in the way.
I’m still sorting through the stuff in the garage. But I’m making progress. What about you?

When you think of Saul clearly disobeying God because he had a better idea and then the weight of the consequences - he forfeited his kingship (God's best) - what feelings do you experience? Why?
Where might you be doing something similar in your life right now? You know what God wants or His word says, but you’ve modified it to keep the “good stuff”?
King Ahab let the stuff that pleased him become more important than his family. How might you be doing that?
What action is needed now to make the important people in your life the priority instead of the pleasant stuff that's getting in the way?
That rich man, he ran to Jesus, bowed before Him and thought he checked all the boxes to get to his heavenly home, but walked away sad and lost.
Many believe they’re saved in their head, but it’s not in their heart. What boxes are you checking to keep the stuff and may be at risk of losing it all in the end?
Remember, Jesus said you cannot serve God and mammon (material things). Which one have you chosen?
Take a few minutes to think about or write down the consequences you may face if you allow the stuff to continue in the three scenarios from today. Is it worth it?
